PM Modi Inaugurates Three New Kolkata Metro Lines

Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Kolkata to inaugurate three extended metro lines, a move that will significantly enhance the city’s public transportation system. The inauguration ceremony took place at the Esplanade Metro Station, marking a pivotal moment for the city’s infrastructure development.

The newly inaugurated sections include a portion of the Howrah Maidan-Esplanade line, which runs under the Hooghly River, connecting Howrah with the heart of Kolkata. This line is a remarkable engineering feat, featuring India’s first underwater metro tunnel. It provides a direct link between Howrah and Sealdah via Esplanade, drastically reducing travel time between these major hubs.

The other two extensions are on the Orange Line and the Yellow Line. The Orange Line, which previously ran from New Garia to Ruby, has now been extended to Beleghata. This extension provides a seamless connection from New Garia to Sector V, a major IT hub. Similarly, the Yellow Line has been extended from Noapara to Dum Dum Airport via Jessore Road, connecting the airport to the existing metro network and improving accessibility for travelers.

Political Reactions and Public Impact

The inauguration has drawn both praise and criticism from various political leaders. Trinamool Congress General Secretary Kunal Ghosh took a swipe at the Prime Minister, posting old pictures of Mamata Banerjee when she was the Railway Minister, suggesting that the foundation for these projects was laid during her tenure. He argued that the Prime Minister’s visit was a last-minute attempt to gain political mileage before the upcoming elections.

In a counter-attack, BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari blamed Mamata Banerjee for delays in metro projects, citing an unresolved land dispute at Chingrighata. Firhad Hakim, the Minister of Urban Development, welcomed the Prime Minister as a guest but maintained that the BJP would have no political footprint in Bengal.

The public, however, seems to be focused on the practical benefits of the new lines. The newly opened sections will significantly reduce commute times and offer a reliable alternative to road travel. The Howrah Maidan to Sector V route, for instance, is expected to operate with a frequency of eight minutes, providing a fast and efficient mode of transport. The new routes are expected to be fully operational for public use starting Friday evening for some routes and Monday for others, with varying hours of service. This expansion is a significant step towards a more connected and accessible Kolkata.
