Bangladeshi Hilsa Hits Kolkata Markets

Bangladeshi Hilsa: After a long wait, Bangladeshi Hilsa (ilish) has finally arrived in Kolkata’s markets, just in time for the festive season! This much-anticipated import, a culinary delight for Bengalis, marks the start of a limited-time trade agreement.

The Arrival

On Wednesday night, a fleet of trucks carrying the prized fish crossed the Benapole-Petrapole border. The first consignment consisted of 50 metric tons, with another 50 metric tons arriving shortly after. On Thursday morning, wholesale fish traders from Kolkata and Howrah eagerly participated in an auction to secure their share of the fresh catch.

The Price and Demand

The retail price for this coveted fish is currently ranging from ₹1,600 to ₹1,700 per kilogram. Fish traders have warned that these prices could climb higher as demand intensifies during the Durga Puja celebrations. The price per kg at export is a minimum of $12.50 (approximately ₹1,057 in Indian currency).

A Diplomatic Delicacy

The export of Hilsa from Bangladesh to India is not a regular occurrence. The Sheikh Hasina government had previously banned the export of this fish, but has made an exception for the Durga Puja festival for the past several years. This year, the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus has approved the export of 1,200 metric tons of Hilsa, a significant reduction from the 2,420 tons allowed last year.

The “Fish Importers Association” has confirmed that the import will be phased in, with the volume of fish gradually increasing over the coming days. Despite the reduced quantity, the arrival of this iconic fish is a welcome relief for millions of foodies in West Bengal who have been eagerly awaiting its taste.
