India’s Golden Night: Deepti and Shafali Lead Women in Blue to Maiden World Cup Title

India’s Golden Night: Navi Mumbai, India – On a historic Sunday evening, the Indian women’s cricket team finally converted years of aspirations into tangible glory, defeating South Africa by 52 runs in a pulsating ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup final at the DY Patil Stadium. The victory marked a watershed moment, securing India’s first-ever global title in women’s cricket and erupting a nation in joyous celebration.

The narrative of the final was scripted by India’s two phenomenal all-rounders, a blend of youthful exuberance and seasoned precision: Shafali Verma and Deepti Sharma.

The Batting Masterclass: Verma Sets the Tone

After a two-hour rain delay, South Africa captain Laura Wolvaardt opted to bowl first, hoping to exploit any early moisture. However, the plan was thwarted by a blistering start from India’s openers.

The 21-year-old Shafali Verma unleashed a spectacular, career-best knock of 87 off 78 balls, peppered with seven fours and two sixes. She combined with vice-captain Smriti Mandhana (45) for a fluent 104-run opening stand, giving India a phenomenal platform. Though South Africa’s bowlers, led by Ayabonga Khaka (3/58), fought back in the middle overs, it was Deepti Sharma who provided the necessary late-innings stability.

Deepti’s run-a-ball 58 was a masterpiece of composure under pressure, and her 47-run partnership with a fiery Richa Ghosh (34 off 24 balls) ensured India posted a challenging total of 298 for 7, the second-highest score in a Women’s World Cup final.

The Proteas’ Fight and India’s Clinical Counter

Chasing a demanding target, South Africa’s reply was anchored by a magnificent century from their captain, Laura Wolvaardt (101 off 98 balls). Wolvaardt, who finished as the tournament’s highest scorer, kept the Proteas firmly in the hunt, stitching together crucial partnerships despite losing Tazmin Brits (run-out by a brilliant direct hit from Amanjot Kaur) and Anneke Bosch early.

The game-changing moment arrived courtesy of a surprise bowling selection. Skipper Harmanpreet Kaur gambled by tossing the ball to part-time off-spinner Shafali Verma, who had bowled only 14 overs in her previous 30 ODIs. The move proved to be a stroke of genius. Verma struck twice in quick succession, dismissing the well-set Sune Luus and the dangerous Marizanne Kapp, to break the spine of the chase and swing the momentum irrevocably in India’s favour.

Deepti’s Decisive Spell Seals History

With the required run rate climbing, the stage was set for the final act. Deepti Sharma, the Player of the Tournament, delivered a spell that will be etched in Indian cricket history. She removed Annerie Dercksen before delivering the decisive blow—getting Wolvaardt caught by Kaur—effectively ending South Africa’s dream. Deepti completed a glorious five-wicket haul (5/39), becoming the first bowler to achieve the feat in a Women’s World Cup final, as South Africa were eventually bowled out for 246 in 45.3 overs.

The final wicket sparked wild celebrations from the Indian team and a sea of roaring, flag-waving fans. For Harmanpreet Kaur’s team, the triumph was a story of redemption, burying the heartbreaks of the 2005 and 2017 finals to etch a new, golden chapter for women’s cricket in the country.
