Indian Music Takes Center Stage at 68th Grammy Nominations; Anoushka Shankar and Shakti Earn Double Nods

Indian Music: The nominations for the 68th Grammy Awards have been announced, and Indian music is once again making a powerful statement on the global stage. For the 2026 ceremony, several Indian artists have secured prestigious nominations, with sitar virtuoso Anoushka Shankar and the legendary fusion group Shakti (featuring Shankar Mahadevan) leading the charge. Both artists have impressively garnered two nominations each, reinforcing the international acclaim of Indian classical and fusion genres.

Anoushka Shankar’s 13th Nomination

Continuing her consistent streak of excellence at the Grammys, Anoushka Shankar has added two more nominations to her name, marking her 12th and 13th career nods.

Best Global Music Album: Her album, ‘Chapter 3: We Return To Light’, has been nominated in this category. She shares this nomination with collaborators Alam Khan and Sarathy Korwar.

Best Global Music Performance: She received a second nomination for the performance ‘Day-Break’.

In an emotional Instagram post, Shankar described the “contrast” of the day, as she received the joyful news of her two nominations while simultaneously battling a severe migraine. She described her experience working with fellow artists Alam Khan and Sarathy Korwar as “sweet.”

Shakti’s Unstoppable Journey

Fresh off their historic Grammy win last year for the album ‘This Moment’, Shankar Mahadevan’s pioneering fusion band Shakti has proven its enduring appeal. The group has secured two new nominations for the 2026 awards, both stemming from their celebrated 50th-anniversary tour:

Best Global Music Album: ‘Mind Explosion (50th Anniversary Tour Live)’

Best Global Music Performance: ‘Sherni’s Dream (Live)’

This back-to-back recognition for Shakti, led by Shankar Mahadevan, underscores the immense and lasting global impact of Indian fusion music.

Other Indian Talents Shine

The recognition for Indian and Indian-origin talent doesn’t stop with Shankar and Shakti. Other artists have also made a significant mark on the 2026 nominations list:

Siddhant Bhatia: His album ‘Sounds of Kumbh’ has been nominated in the Best Global Music Album category.

Charu Suri: Pianist Charu Suri received a nomination for her album ‘Shayan’ in the Best Contemporary Music Album category.

The Countdown Begins

Music enthusiasts from around the world will now eagerly await the main event. The 68th Grammy Awards ceremony is scheduled to take place on February 1, 2026, at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles. This wave of nominations has not only solidified the position of India’s rich musical heritage on the world stage but also opened new doors of inspiration for the next generation of artists.
