Aboldtabol Centenary Celebration: A Primary School in Howrah Revives with a Unique Initiative

Aboldtabol Centenary Celebration: In a heartwarming effort to celebrate the centenary of Sukumar Ray’s timeless classic, “Aboldtabol,” a primary school in Howrah has taken an innovative approach to revive itself. The Bantra Public Library Shishuniketan primary school, which was once on the verge of closure due to a dramatic drop in student enrollment, has transformed its premises with a whimsical theme based on the beloved Bengali nonsense rhymes.

Once a bustling institution with nearly 600 students, the school’s charm began to fade over time. The student count plummeted to a mere 10, putting the school’s very existence in jeopardy. However, a dedicated group of teachers and alumni refused to let it close. They embarked on a door-to-door campaign, persuading parents to enroll their children and promising a renewed educational environment. Their efforts paid off, and the school’s student population began to grow again.

To further attract and engage young learners, especially by fostering a love for old Bengali rhymes and poems, the school was completely redesigned. Classrooms have been named after the famous rhymes from “Aboldtabol,” and the walls are adorned with vibrant murals depicting scenes from these iconic verses. This unique initiative has breathed new life into the school, turning it into a colorful and imaginative space for children.

The school’s principal, Arpita Ghosh, shared that the goal was to create a stimulating environment that reconnects children with the rich heritage of Bengali literature. The centenary celebration, attended by distinguished guests including West Bengal’s Food Processing Minister Arup Roy, was a testament to the school’s successful revival. The minister praised the school’s initiative for its commitment to promoting the Bengali language and culture. This creative effort not only celebrates a literary masterpiece but also serves as a beacon of hope for community-led educational revitalization.
