Father of Hilsa” Lands in Digha: Rare ‘Teliya Bhola’ Fetches Millions!

Father of Hilsa Lands in Digha: While Hilsa has already brought smiles to the faces of Digha’s fishermen, even bigger news has emerged from the fishing hub! The start of the fishing season has brought immense fortune, as a rare species of fish, far exceeding the price of the “silver crop” (Hilsa), has landed, bringing unbridled joy to the local fishing community.

Just three days into the fishing season, as trawlers, boats, and “bhootbhootis” ventured into the sea, fishermen not only found Hilsa but also stumbled upon a rare species of fish. This has created a festive atmosphere at the Digha Mohana Fish Auction Center. On Wednesday, millions of rupees worth of Bhola fish were brought to the center for auction. This rare and special Bhola fish commands a price of several lakhs of rupees.

The Digha Mohana Fish Auction Center, the largest marine fish auction center in Eastern India, has seen an auspicious start to the current fishing season. Favorable conditions for fishing have prevailed since day one, and the supply of marine fish at the center is steadily increasing, bringing smiles to the faces of the fishermen.

Record Haul: Hilsa and the Elusive Teliya Bhola

From the very first day, alongside other marine fish, Hilsa has made its appearance. On Wednesday, June 18th, tons of Hilsa fish were brought to the Digha Mohana Fish Auction Center. In addition to the Hilsa, 29 Teliya Bhola fish were also put up for auction on the same day, selling for millions of rupees.

The fish were auctioned at the MKB fish stall. After intense bidding, one organization made the highest bid of ₹1700 per kilogram. The total weight of the 29 fish was 456 kg, bringing in a grand total of nearly ₹8 lakhs.

These fish were caught by the trawler belonging to Mihir Kumar Bhuiyan, a trawler owner from the Purba Medinipur district. The swim bladder of the Teliya Bhola is highly valued for its medicinal properties and is in great demand for producing expensive medicines, primarily for export. In this particular instance, the price was slightly lower due to the smaller size of the fish.

An Unexpected Start to the Season

Shyam Sundar Das, Chairman of the Digha Fishermen and Fish Traders Association, stated, “Generally, these types of fish are seen at the end of the season. However, this year, Teliya Bhola is being found right from the beginning of the season.”

He added, “The fish caught today were comparatively very small in size, and they received a commensurate price. Fishermen are thrilled to find such highly profitable fish with medicinal properties, including Hilsa, so early in the season. We hope for a record amount of fish to be landed at Digha Mohana this current season.”

This deep-water fish is rarely seen, and catching even a couple is like winning the lottery. With a local trawler owner catching these valuable fish, the district itself has benefited financially, spreading a festive mood throughout Purba Medinipur.
