Ilisher Trumphedo: A Royal Feast for Durga Puja

Ilisher Trumphedo: Durga Puja is a time of celebration, joy, and, most importantly, delicious food. For food lovers, it’s a golden opportunity to indulge in a wide variety of Bengali delicacies. While many prefer to dine out at restaurants after visiting pandals, others find joy in preparing delectable meals at home. If you’re looking to cook something special this Durga Puja, why not try a unique and flavourful recipe straight from a ‘Thakur Bari’ (Bengali noble family) kitchen: Ilisher Trumphedo.

This dish is a magnificent blend of coconut milk and fragrant spices that elevates the already exquisite taste of the Ilish (hilsa) fish. It’s surprisingly easy to make and doesn’t require an extensive list of ingredients.

The Recipe: Ilisher Trumphedo

Ingredients (Ilisher Trumphedo):

  1. 2 tablespoons ghee
  2. Whole garam masala (1 cardamom, 5-6 cloves, 2 cinnamon sticks, 1 mace)
  3. 1 cup finely chopped onions
  4. 2 tablespoons onion paste
  5. 1 teaspoon ginger paste
  6. ½ teaspoon dried red chilli paste (or to taste)
  7. Salt to taste
  8. 1 cup coconut milk
  9. 2-3 green chillies
  10. 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  11. Pieces of Ilish fish (marinated with salt)

Instructions:

Heat the Ghee: In a pan, heat the ghee. Once it’s hot, add the whole garam masala and sauté for a few moments until their aroma is released.

Sauté the Onions: Add the finely chopped onions and sauté until they turn golden brown.

Fry the Pastes: Now, add the onion paste, ginger paste, and dried red chilli paste. Fry them well until the spices release their oil.

Add Coconut Milk: Mix in salt and the coconut milk.

Simmer the Fish: Once the gravy comes to a boil, gently place the salted pieces of Ilish fish and the green chillies into the pan. Cover the pan with a lid and cook on low heat for 5 minutes.

Finish and Serve: After 5 minutes, remove the lid, add the lemon juice, and turn off the gas.

Serve the hot Ilisher Trumphedo with steamed rice and give your family and friends a taste of royalty this Durga Puja. This recipe is not only delicious but also a unique part of traditional Bengali cuisine. Enjoy your festive feast!
