Job Fairs: In a significant move to bridge the gap between skilled youth and the job market, the West Bengal government organized a “Job Fairs Cum Apprenticeship Mela” at the Durgapur Government ITI campus. This event, held on Tuesday, September 2nd, was a joint initiative by the Department of Technical Education, Training and Skill Development, and the Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs).
A Platform for Direct Employment
The primary objective of this fair was to create direct employment opportunities for students who have graduated or are currently enrolled in polytechnic, ITI, vocational, and PBSSD courses. Instead of a traditional job search, the fair served as a direct link between trained candidates and prospective employers. Various prominent public and private sector companies participated, offering both jobs and apprenticeship opportunities to the skilled workforce.
Skill Meets Opportunity
The ITI campus witnessed a massive turnout of students and young professionals, who arrived with their resumes in hand, eager to meet with recruiters. This platform benefited both the job seekers and the companies. While skilled students found a clear path to employment, the participating organizations gained a valuable platform to select suitable talent for their workforce.
A Vision for the Future
According to government officials, the main goal of such fairs is to connect the educated youth with employment and to increase the supply of skilled workers in the state’s industrial sector. Attendees expressed that the fair significantly reduced the hassle of job hunting and boosted their confidence by allowing them to interact directly with recruiters.
Following the success in Durgapur, officials have announced plans to organize similar job and apprenticeship fairs in other districts of West Bengal. This expansion aims to benefit a larger number of students and young people across the state.
The Durgapur fair was more than just an event; it was a crucial step in transforming skills into employment, providing a tangible pathway for the dreams of countless young individuals.
