Industrial Hub Durgapur Extends a Hand: $5 Lakh Donation to CM’s Relief Fund for North Bengal Flood Victims

Industrial Hub Durgapur Extends a Hand: Sukanta Banik Chowdhury, Positive Barta, Durgapur, October 9 —

As devastating floods submerge one area after another in North Bengal, leaving a trail of destruction, the Durgapur Chamber of Commerce and Industry has stepped forward to support the affected populace. During a press conference held on Wednesday at the Asansol-Durgapur Development Authority (ADDA) office, the organization announced a financial assistance of ₹5 lakh to the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund.

Chandan Datta, the Chamber’s President, explained the rationale, stating, “We are witnessing district after district in North Bengal facing horrific losses. Currently, the most effective way is to provide this money to the government, as relief will reach the most vulnerable and correct places fastest through their channels.”

High-ranking ADDA officials, along with the Chamber’s Vice-President and several members, attended the press briefing. Sources within the Chamber indicate that if the flood situation in North Bengal escalates further, the possibility of increasing the aid amount has not been ruled out.

Crisis in North Bengal

Vast stretches of Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri, Cooch Behar, and Alipurduar districts remain ravaged by floodwaters. The Teesta, Taldoh, and other rivers have swelled past the danger mark, inundating countless villages, severely damaging roads, bridges, and agricultural land. Thousands have been rendered homeless and are in desperate need of aid.

A Beacon of Social Responsibility

In this somber context, the Durgapur Chamber’s donation is more than just financial assistance—it is a shining example of humanitarian commitment. The organization emphasized that “standing by each other during a disaster is the true social responsibility. We hope this initiative will motivate other industrial and commercial establishments in the state.”

As North Bengal is battered by nature’s fury, the hand of sympathy extended by the industrial city of Durgapur proves that the people of the state remain united. No matter how deep the crisis, the light of humanity remains unbroken.
